Spanish Language Pedagogy 2025

Sofia

Sofía Lagos

My name is Sofía Valeria Lagos Alfaro, I’m 22 years old. First, I would like to introduce my roots saying that I grow up in a small town called Linares with my family, where I live with my parents Ana and Carlos, my older brother Gonzalo and my little sister Pamela. With whom I grew up as if we were twins and learnt English through music. My family is very loving and hardworking, and it has taught me that respect and education are the most important things. My mom is the most important person in my life because she transmitted all the values that I have and the love for reading, which is my hobby and now my door to the world. She and my dad have always supported me in the things that I want to pursue.

I studied elementary and middle school in a catholic school, Colegio La Providencia. It was in this school were my vocation for teaching was born thanks to a professor I had. She was very inspiring to me because she not only worried about, we learning the basics but also, she cared about our feelings and worries. So, I started feeling that pedagogy could change the society through small actions. Then I changed to Liceo Valentín Letelier to study High School because I wanted to learn in an environment more challenging given that this is the biggest school in my city. In this school I gained beautiful moments and friendships. I also developed important leadership roles, like being president of the general student center in a difficult time in the country, the “Estallido social”, where we, the student, had an important role.

I would like to mention that I actively participated in several orchestras playing the violin since I was eight years old until I was seventeen, like the orchestras in the schools where I studied and the Linares Student Symphony Orchestra (OSEL), thanks to these opportunities I was able to develop my personality and nourish myself with cultural experiences. As well as my participation in contests about writing, where my mom always motivated and helped me.

As I said, from a very young age I knew that I wanted to be a teacher. For this reason, I moved alone to Concepción to study Pedagogía en Español in one of the best universities in Chile, Universidad de Concepción. In this place I have had to grow and become a woman, learning to be independent and take important decisions on my own. But now, I live with my sister because she is studying in the same university, and we can rely on each other.

With this experience the most important thing is that I have reaffirmed my vocation for teaching, through the experience as an intern in the Colegio Villa Nonguén. A small school where I have known different realities and educational needs. In this school I have learnt not only through the students but also thanks to the good school environment that the professors have created. Where I have realized the importance of collaborative teaching work.

To finish I would like to say that I consider myself as a woman who wants to continue growing academically and personally and through my perseverance see the world and the different educational cultures, to be the very best teacher I can be, like the ones that I had, and hopefully motivate little ones like I was once.

Emilio

Emilio Chávez

My name is Emilio Chávez Bórquez, student of Pedagogía en Español in the Universidad de Concepción. I am writing to express my interest to apply to Beca Práctica Profesional Minnetonka. This scholarship is a great opportunity to contribute as a student of Pedagogía en Español, soon to be a teacher. I am deeply motivated to pursue my academic goals with the opportunities that this scholarship might bring me, specifically in my field of studies which are Education, Literature and Linguistics, with a special interest in Discourses Analysis and Chilean and Latin American literature.

Nowadays, I am a student of Pedagogía en Español and Professor’s assistant for the subjects of Análisis del Discurso y Pragmática and Lingüística del Texto. Continuing with my academic career, I was a member of Teatro y Aula, a Project that tried to bring theater closer to Chilean classrooms. Later, in my second year, I started tutoring younger students of Pedagogía en Español, this was an instance to show the university and the cultural system of collage to new students. In my third year, I wrote and presented an investigation about newspaper headlines in Chile during 1973. In this very moment, I am investigating and writing about Climate Change as a noun in the press. This investigation focuses on the different ways to name climate change or climate crisis. This research has been approved to be presented at II Congreso de Jóvenes Lingüistas de Chile. Also, I am doing another research on my own, this one focuses on the topic of criminal cases in Chilean newspapers during 2023 and the way that the press named the act of committing a crime. This presentation has also been approved to present in the congress I already mentioned. Finally, I would like to mention that since 2021 I have been part of the program Quiero Ser Profe of the non-lucrative foundation Elige Educar, in this program I am a tutor that provides information and guidance to young people that have shown interest in studying to be a teacher.

I would like to know the reality of public education in Minnetonka to replicate those elements that could be useful in the Chilean education system. In this way, I would like to know as many educational realities as I can because I think this knowledge will guide me to become the teacher I want to be.

I considered myself to be a great candidate for this scholarship, in the way that I have an academic background, research experience and most important thing of it all: I love teaching. I think this is the best way to contribute to society because I strongly believe that education change lives.

Francisco

Francisco Silva

My name is Francisco Silva, I’m Chilean and 21 years old. I’m from Curanilahue, a mining town, and currently, I rent a room in Concepción to study Spanish Pedagogy at the University of Concepción. I live with my parents and my two sisters; we have a dog, two cats, and three turtles. I love singing and doing karaoke, and one of my favorite songs is «Golden Hour.» I enjoy listening to podcasts like «La Gaviota Podcast», «Vida Encontré», and «Caso 63.» I play the drums and am learning to play the guitar, a skill I’ve always wanted to develop. Additionally, I’m studying Catalan and English because of my passion for languages.

I consider myself a technology enthusiast, as I’m interested in how digital tools can enhance learning in classrooms. For me, being part of this exchange is an opportunity to broaden my knowledge and improve my teaching practices. I am convinced that learning new methodologies and educational approaches abroad will allow me to make a positive impact on Chilean education. I also want to deepen my understanding of teaching Spanish as a second language in a non-Spanish- speaking context, which will enrich my development as a teacher.
